| Why Rehabilitation in 3D? |
Life is a beautiful process. For millions of generations, this process has been going smoothly, without obstacles. From birth till the final moment of their lives as they leave earth, humans have the choice to act as they wish. But our actions, over the last few decades, have begun to seriously hinder the progress of one another and the process of life itself. This is due to man’s inherent limitations: greed, lack of planning, lack of awareness/understanding and ego. These have multidimensional ramifications beyond the scope and horizon of the individual. As a result, the quality of life is rapidly declining.
Disturbances to our habitat are problems we create and face on a regular basis. Disturbances to Nature are not just limited to life-threatening events such as wars and tsunamis. Injury, divorce, depression, pollution, racism, social segregation and abuse are all disturbances. Every disturbance or problem has all three dimensions. A physical handicap may require prosthesis for rehabilitation, but the psychology of the individual and the family is a much more important issue, as are acceptance, mobility, career and other social issues. Similarly, a psychological issue such as depression has a physical (the need for proper nutrition) and a social context (the need to interact with others to overcome the issue). Social problems, such as reservations or affirmative action, environmental crime and so on give rise to significant problems in the physical environment as well as the psychology of policymakers, practitioners and the common man.
Human limitations force us to address or rehabilitate the physical or visible problem, ignoring the hidden 90% of the psychological and social iceberg that remains hidden. Removing carbon dioxide from the air using technology may reduce global warming risks, but only temporarily. And giving a handicapped person a wheelchair is not the final answer to his personal relationship with family or his employer. Social problems require much more than monetary or physical support. In all these cases, the deep-rooted psychological issues and social factors are required to be analyzed and addressed. Removing the top 10% of the iceberg only brings out more of what is hidden. Similarly, when only a physical issue is addressed, the hidden psychological and social issues begin to surface, requiring another round of rehabilitation. The problems we face are not limited to two individuals or families. The issues are of serious proportions. World Organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, Red Cross, UNESCO, World Economic Forum and others spend billions of dollars just studying them and trillions of dollars trying to treat them.
No rehabilitation is complete if all three dimensions are not addressed. Spending billions on addressing issues in the physical dimension superficially addresses the issue, leaving scope for its emergence in other ways. Hence, any solution needs to be analyzed in all three dimensions and simultaneous action needs to be taken. This is the scientific finding of MGRM’s continuing global research of over 15 years.
