B.A. Programme

Total Number of Seats - 120

(Not more than 20 students per discipline)

Introduction:

The new B.A. Programme came into force with effect from July 2004, when it replaces the B.A. (Pass) programme of study. This restructured course has been introduced, keeping in mind the needs and the interests of the students. The vision of this programme is one that acknowledges the need for a course of study that will be in tune with the immediate environment of the students, as well as equip them for the world of work and higher education. The structure, scope and flexibility of this course is such that, it can either be a terminal degree that equips students for a profession, or an enabling degree that is a prelude to higher studies. The BA Programme will provide the students with an enriching and enjoyable experience, in the form of a curriculum that is intellectually stimulating, socially relevant and interdisciplinary in nature. The departments of language, humanities, social sciences and commerce will cooperate in this endeavour.

Structure:

The students who take admission into the BA Programme will study four kinds of courses. Each student will be required to study twelve papers in the three years. The following is the distribution of the courses over the entire periods of study:

(C) Foundation Courses: The students can offer one foundation course from among the following:
  • Language, Literature and Culture: Since language and literature form a significant part of our daily lives and environment, this course will aim to increase the students' understanding of how language functions; the issues and dimensions of a language in relation to class, gender, ethnicity and identity; the linguistic scenario in India; Indian literature from the earliest times to the present day as seen in the writing in the various Indian languages; and, contemporary culture and its representation in the print and electronic media.
  • Human Rights, Gender and Environment: This course will aim to sensitise the students and generate awareness in the areas of social inequality with reference to caste, gender, ethnicity and class; globalization and its impact on the marginalized groups in society; human rights - the international and national scenario; gender in the social, political and legal arenas; and, environment and substantial development-issue, policies and movement.
  • Social Enquiry: This course will aim to introduce students to different branches of academic knowledge and show their evolution in different cultural traditions. The attempt will be to stimulate debates among the students on how issues and problems can be approached from many distinct, yet complementary perspectives. The course has been planned around an analysis of the various branches of the social sciences - history, philosophy, politics, sociology, economics, psychology, environment and culture. *

(D) Application Courses: These courses have been designed to equip students with that practical competence, for which they earlier needed to go outside the University system. Each student will study one application course. Since these courses have a substantial practical component the maximum number of students who can be accommodated in each course is 20. For a course to be offered, a minimum of 10 students will need to opt for it. The following application courses will be available in the college.

a) Creative Writing: English & Hindi
b) Conflict Resolution and Peace Building : Political Science Department
c) Computer Application : Mathematics Department
d) Indian Art : History and Philosophy Department

Administration: The BA Programme Committee of Gargi College will be responsible for the co-ordination of the course and will be available to deal with problems, concerns and queries of the students. The following are the members of this committee.

Dr. Anjana Neira Dev, Dept. of English
Dr. Deepika Chatterjee, Dept. of Philosophy

  • Available only in English medium.

* These courses will be taught in both Hindi and English medium and the students can choose their medium of examination

All courses listed above are governed by the norms of a require minimum and permitted maximum class size. Hence students are advised to state their second preferences. They may consult counselors available in the College before filling the admission forms.
