- B.EI.
Ed.! That sounds familiar. What exactly is it ?
The full form of B.EI.Ed. is Bachelor of Elementary Education.
It is an exciting four-year integrated professional degree
programme for training teachers at the elementary school
level.
- Does
it mean that we will get jobs after completing it?
Yes! It means that after four years of rigorous training
you will be a professionally qualified teacher. Whether
you want to teach right away or pursue higher education
will of course depend on what you wish to do further.
- So,
it is graduation plus much more. It is a job-oriented programme!
Absolutely!
- Is
it a recognised programme?
Certainly. It is recognised by the National Council for
Teacher Education (NCTE). It was initiated by the Maulana
Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE),
Delhi University in the year 1994-1995.
- But
is it available in English only?
Not at all! It is a bilingual programme. Both English
and Hindi are the media of instruction.
- What
exactly does this programme encompass?
Thats an important question. The idea behind this
programme is to integrate the study of subject knowledge,
human development, pedagogy and communication skills. In
consonance with this aim, the programme offers both compulsory
as well as optional theory courses. It has a strong focus
on practicum courses. It also entails a comprehensive school
internship programme in its fourth year. A special departmental
library and a material resourcing laboratory are available
to the students.
-
That went a little over my head. Could
you explain them to me one by one?
The two essential components of this programme are both
theory and practicum courses. There are 19 theory courses
which the student is expected to cover during the four year
programme of study. This includes:
- Foundation
Courses :
These courses are designed to enable students to make
an in-depth study of child development, concepts and perspectives
in education, the context in which the education of the
child is situated, processes and techniques of social organization;
various issues related to elementary education and to develop
skills on communicating and relating.
- Core
Courses :
Core courses offer the prospective teacher the opportunity
to reconstruct concepts learnt in school and to integrate
them within a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Pedagogy
Courses :
Courses in pedagogy are designed to help develop core
teaching skills specific to the teaching of young children.
This includes developing perspectives in pedagogy and techniques
related to specific knowledge areas.
- Liberal
Courses :
Liberal optionals provide students the opportunity to
study specific disciplines with academic rigour. They are
designed to enrich the knowledge base to allow further study
in the discipline and in the pedagogies in which students
specialize.
-
Practicum Courses :
The Practicum Courses are another very important component
of this programme. These courses are designed to allow a
variety of work experiences with children in and outside
elementary schools and opportunities for self-reflection
and development. The practicum input includes: Performing
and Fine arts, Craft and Participatory work, School-Contact
programme, Observing Children, Self Development Workshops,
Physical Education, School Internship, Projects, Tutorials
and Colloquia.
- What
about the eligibility criteria for this programme?
There is a Centralised Entrance Test (CET-B.EI.Ed.)
conducted by the Department of Education, Delhi University,
comprising a written test and an interview for the B.EI.Ed.
programme. The prospectus and application forms will be
available at the Department of Education in May 2006.

Speak:
" I've been extremely lucky to have been a part
of the B.EI.Ed. programme. If I walked into it with
hopes of
getting a job out of it, I can safely say I got much
more than I expected. B.El.Ed. makes you go beyond the
given text, think critically of things that seem obvious,
experience different facets of classroom teaching
and have loads of fun being an active part of our educational
system."
