Add-on or adjunct courses are another distinctive feature
of college life in Gargi. These courses aim to
familiarise students with the diverse career options open
to them after graduation, impart professional skills
and help them to learn from the experience and expertise of
professional resource persons. A student can

Education for Special Children
This course will enable you to understand the nature and needs
of the disabled children in the Indian
context. It will explore the impact of disability on growth
and development: physical, intellectual and social
dimensions. It will also focus on the assessment of disability
and implications for designing educational
programmes. Sensitization to the problems and needs of special
children will be a key focus area.

Vedic Mathematics
Vedic Mathematics is a modern course based on our ancient
and time tested formulae of mathematical
knowledge. The derivational meaning of the word Vedic
is fountainhead of all knowledge and Vedic
Mathematics bases itself on this and other treatises like
the one by the Shankaracharya of Puri (1884-
1960). It will enhance a students conceptional clarity
and help them in their computational skills.

Safeguarding Our Environment
It is every individuals desire to have a healthy earth
for the future generations. Environment impacts our
lives in all spheres-water, air, forest, village life and
natural resources. We are struggling to manage the
environment -water scarcity is a reality, air and water pollution
and related health disorders are on the rise,
forests are diminishing. Are there practical solutions to
the ever growing challenges of environment and
development? We seek to find workable solutions to some of
these difficult questions through the add-on
course on Safeguarding Our Environment.

An Introduction to Gems & Gemology
Gems have been the object of man's fascination ever since
their discovery. Today modern scientific
gemology is giving an insight into the character and behavior
of gems. The study of Gemology is relevant to
the trader, the dealer, the artist or anyone fascinated by
gems stones. The aim of this course is to introduce
the student to the fascinating world of gems - some of which
are part of our national heritage. The lectures
will cover various aspects of gems-history, occurrence, relation
between astrology and gems, identification
of gems and jewelery designing.

Theatre Workshop
For a complete theatrical experience, enrol for the Theatre
Workshop. This course will help students
undertand the on-stage and behind the scenes aspects of theatre.
Lectures on light, sound, stage setting
and acting from eminent theatre personalities will perhaps
be the launch pad for the setting up of a Gargi
Theatrical Society.

Introduction
to Biotechnology & Bioinformatics
The emerging fields of biotechnology & bioinformatics
combine the streams of botany, zoology,
microbiology and advanced computer applications. The course
aims to study the application of specialised
molecular techniques to the discovery, development and manufacture
of biopharmaceutical agents,
genetically modified crops, transgenic animals for drug production,
gene therapy, to mention a few. This
course will be useful for students intending to pursue higher
studies in Life Science and Biotechnology.

Understanding Cinema
This course will look at the medium of cinema, both as an
aesthetic experience and as a canvas for
larger social issues. It will help students develop a keen
appreciation of cinema as the meeting point of
various art forms-script writing, light, sound, choreography,
camera.. Action! in the real sense is what
students can look forward to.

Appreciating Indian Art
Certain aspects of Indian art like aesthetics, sculpture,
architecture and painting would be introduced.
Knowledge thus acquired would help a student to understand
better the dynamics of archaeology,
museology, finer nuances of art, interior design etc. This
course would include lectures on the changing
contours of Indian art and architecture. Visual presentations
and film screening will be an important
component.

Translating Contemporary Indian Writing
This course welcomes students competent in any Indian language,
to acquire the skills required to
translate contemporary prose into English and to subject the
translated piece to the process of editing, so
as to produce translations fit for publication. The course
includes a practical component, besides providing
students with an exposure to the burgeoning publishing industry
and its symbiotic relationship with
translation. This is an opportunity to interact with practising
translators from diverse linguistic backgrounds
through a series of lectures on translating varied forms of
writing such as journalistic pieces, essays, short
stories and novels.

The Department of Philosophy offers an add-on course on Professional
Ethics in collaboration with experts
from various fields. The course would focus on issues pertaining
to work ethics and will provide students
with insights that will be of immense use in the professional
life that awaits them. The course is open to non-
Philosophy students of Gargi College.
